Risks

What are the risks?

In an experienced Surgeon’s and Staff’s hands, LASIK is a very safe procedure. With that said, it is important to note that LASIK surgery does not guarantee that every patient’s vision will be improved to 20/20; instead, it is intended to reduce or eliminate each patient’s dependency on corrective eyewear. This is virtually always the case, with the majority of our patients seeing 20/20 or better after PRK or LASIK vision correction. Twenty Twenty is not necessarily perfect vision. It is not realistic for candidates to assume that their vision will be “perfect” after surgery. In fact, if you are over 45 and wear reading glasses with our contact lenses before surgery it is very likely you will still need them after undergoing the procedure. If your goal is to eliminate glasses for near and far, we have solutions for this as well. Just ask Dr. Malitz or a member of our well trained staff.

Next, potential candidates must be aware that, as with any surgical procedure, there are risks. With LASIK, complications may include dry eyes, infections, overcorrection or undercorrection, double or multiple images, corneal scarring, corneal edema, persistent eye pain or discomfort, glare and halos in the line of vision, and a decreased ability to see well at night or in fog. Fortunately, we rarely encounter these issues in our practice.

Finally, since LASIK has only been performed since 1987, so long-term effects are unlikely. All potential recipients are encouraged to discuss with their ophthalmologists the risks and procedures of LASIK before committing to surgery.
