Our newest doctor and Ophthalmologist, Dr. Richard Abrahamson is specially trained in comprehensive medical and surgical eye care. Dr. Abrahamson is Board Certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology and brings over 30 years of experience in the field with expertise in Cataract-Refractive Surgery.  The Ohio Valley Eye Institute is pleased to have been able to coerce Dr. Abrahamson out of his brief retirement to provide the latest in advanced forms of eye care to our great practice!  We’d love to help you see clearly like many thousands of our other patients, so see what some of his patients and others have said about Dr. Abrahamson here.

Dr. Abrahamson is a third-generation, Board-Certified Ophthalmologist (eye specialist and surgeon) and had one of the premier practices in Cincinnati, Ohio for 30 years before “testing” retirement in 2022. Dr. Abrahamson comes from a rich heritage in eye care, as his grandfather, Ira Abrahamson, Sr., started his family’s practice in 1927 as an Eye, Ear, Nose & Throat Surgeon.  Of interest, Rick’s grandfather left his practice for nearly 6 years to become a Lt. Col. in the U.S. Army & Commander-In-Chief of the largest hospital for the Allied Forces during WWII.  Rick’s father, Ira Abrahamson, Jr., continued the practice and was an internationally-recognized Ophthalmologist, lecturing world-wide, in addition to writing three books and publishing over 150 scientific articles during his career.  He also was Professor Emeritus of Ophthalmology at The University of Cincinnati and founded the Abrahamson Pediatric Eye Institute at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

Rick graduated from Middlebury College in Vermont and attended Medical School at The University of Cincinnati. He completed an Internship in Internal Medicine at The Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, went on to do a Glaucoma Research Fellowship at The Tufts New England Medical Center, and received his Ophthalmology training at The Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL.  After completing his training, he joined his father in practice, where they worked together for 17 years. Rick was a long-time Director of Ophthalmology at the Jewish Hospital of Cincinnati and Volunteer Assistant Professor at the University of Cincinnati Department of Ophthalmology. He is recognized by his colleagues as providing the highest quality comprehensive care. He has extensive experience with anterior segment disease with a special interest in vision correction surgery including cataract surgery, clear lens exchange, and the use of advanced technology (Toric- astigmatism-correcting & Multi-Focal) intra-ocular lens implants. He also has extensive training and expertise in glaucoma treatment (including laser and minimally-invasive glaucoma procedures). He is currently accepting new patients.
