CHALAZION TREATMENT GUIDE

What is a Chalazion? A chalazion is a small, painless lump that develops on the eyelid due to the blockage of an oil gland. It may cause redness, swelling, and mild discomfort. Here’s what you need to know about its treatment.

  1. Warm Compress:
  • Apply a warm compress to the affected area for 10-15 minutes, 3-4 times a day.
  • The warmth helps soften the blockage, allowing it to drain about 50% of the time
  1. Lid Massage:
  • After the warm compress, gently massage the eyelid in a circular motion.
  • This can help in the drainage process and promote healing.
  1. Eyelid Hygiene:
  • Keep your eyelids clean by using a mild cleanser or baby shampoo diluted in warm water.
  • Gently wash your eyelids to remove any debris or crusting.
  1. Prescription Medications:
  • Chalazia are uncommonly associated with an infection and are generally non responsive to antibiotics.  We may prescribe antibiotic ointments or drops if an infection is present.
  • Follow the instructions carefully and complete the full course of medication.
  1. Avoid Eye Makeup and Contact Lenses:
  • During the treatment, avoid wearing eye makeup or contact lenses.
  • These can further irritate the affected area and slow down the healing process.
  1. Follow-up Appointments:
  • Schedule a follow-up appointment with your eye care professional.
  • They will monitor your progress and adjust the treatment plan if necessary.

When to Seek Medical Attention:

  • If the chalazion doesn’t improve or worsens after several weeks of home treatment.
  • If the lump becomes painful, causes vision problems, or affects your daily activities.

Remember:

  • Avoid squeezing or popping the chalazion, as it can lead to infection or scarring.
  • Be consistent with the warm compresses and eyelid hygiene for optimal results.
  • If you have any concerns or questions, consult your healthcare provider.
