If you’re considering blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery in Evansville, Indiana, you’ve come to the right place. In this article, we’ll explain everything you need to know about blepharoplasty, including what it is, how it works, and what you can expect from the procedure.

What is a Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that improves the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. It involves the removal of excess skin, muscle, and fat from the eyelids to create a more youthful and refreshed appearance. Blepharoplasty can be performed on its own or in combination with other cosmetic procedures such as CO2 laser resurfacing or BOTOX® treatments.

Who is a Candidate for a Blepharoplasty?

The ideal candidate for a blepharoplasty is someone who is in good overall health and has realistic expectations about the results of the procedure. Candidates should have droopy or sagging eyelids, excess skin and wrinkles around the eyes, or bags under their eyes that make them look tired or older than they actually are.

What Happens During a Blepharoplasty?

A Blepharoplasty is typically performed on an outpatient basis and takes approximately 1-3 hours to complete. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, general anesthesia, or sedation depending on the preference of the patient and the surgeon.  In our surgical center, we use twilight anesthesia and an upper lid blepharoplasty takes less than one hour!

Prior to the procedure, Dr. Malitz will take detailed measurements and place marks on your skin.  Local anesthesia will be administered after you receive intravenous sedation.  During the procedure, Dr. Malitz will make incisions in the natural folds of the eyelids to minimize scarring. He will then remove excess skin, and sometimes muscle, and fat from the eyelids and reposition the remaining tissue to create a more youthful and natural-looking appearance. Once the procedure is complete, the incisions are closed with sutures.

Recovery from a Blepharoplasty

After the procedure, patients may resume their activities in just a couple of days.   Rest and ice is beneficial to allow their eye lids to heal. Most patients experience some bruising and swelling.   It is important to be off blood thinners for 10 days to minimize bleeding and bruising.  The swelling typically subsides within 1-2 weeks. Patients may resume normal activity and may even bend, lift, stoop and strain after modern techniques but should avoid rubbing the eyes following the procedure to avoid complications.

Results of a Blepharoplasty

The results of blepharoplasty are typically long-lasting and can be seen soon after the procedure. Patients will notice a significant improvement in the appearance of their eyelids and a more youthful and refreshed appearance overall. However, it’s important to note that the results of the procedure will vary from person to person and may not be permanent.

Choosing the Right Surgeon for aBlepharoplasty

Choosing the right surgeon for a blepharoplasty is an important decision that should not be taken lightly. It’s essential to choose a surgeon who is experienced, skilled, and board-certified. At our practice, our team of highly skilled and experienced surgeons has the expertise and knowledge necessary to deliver the best possible results for our patients.  Dr. Malitz has over thirty years of experience performing this procedure.   As an Ophthalmologist, he spent 3 years training on the eyes and eyelids.   Although other types of surgeons can and do perform blepharoplasties, only an eye surgeon has extensive training focused on the eyes and eyelids.   Plastic surgeons generally spend 5 years in general surgery and only 2 years in plastic surgery where their focus is diluted with nose, face, ear, skin, hand, breast, and liposuction among other procedures.
